The American Fleet.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Napier, Last Night. The Mayor of Napier has telegraphed to the American Consul-General at Auckland, Mr W. Prickett, inviting Admiral Evans' fleet to call at Napier in the event of a visit being paid to Wellington. The ConsulGeneral has replied: "I shall be pleased to convey your cordial invitation to Admiral Evans should his fleet visit Auckland, and, meanwhile, I will advise the State Department at Washington by letter of your request."
Dunedin, Last Night. The Secretary for the Colonies has wired to the Governor as follows: "The United States Government accept with great pleasure the invitation of your Government for the American ileet to visit New Zealand, but it is only possible to visit Auckland, in view of a speedy return to the Altantic. Auckland, This Day. The Mayor, referring to the entertainment of those aboard the American fleet, said the visit was of national significance, and the invitation had been sent hy the Premier on behalf of New Zealand. He had no doubt that Parliament would make special provision for the entertainment. He suggested that Parliament should adjourn during the visit, and all the members could come to Auckland. He also hoped that the Maoris playing a prominent part in the festivities would not be overlooked.
