The question of sending Col-Ser-geant Friar Home to compete in the cadet competitions at Bisley came before the Onehunga Borough Council last evening, when it was decided to urge upon the Government to make provision for sending the lad Home, or, failing that, an appeal to be made to the townspeople to provide funds. A grave charge against the Education Department of overcrowding a school was made at a meeting of householders in Linwood. The speaker said he could take anyone to a school jn the North Canterbury district where 181 children were crowded in the space that was alloted by the regulations to 77 children. That meant that, in the space for 42 children there were 100, or that where there was room for one child two and a half children were crowded. "If a farmer packed two buljocks in a truck big enough for one," said he, "he would hear very quickly from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. I can show anybody the school, and you will see little girls in a room that on a hot day is a little Black Hole of Calcutta."

Last evening che Hamilton Ministrel Society known as the "Kentucky Darkies" forgathered at a "smoker" in St. Peter's schoolroom. There was a good attendance and Mr Ranstead presided. The evening was spent in a convivial manner and the musical conductor, Mr S. Riley, was presented with a substantial mark of the members' appreciation of his services to the Society, which had been established in connection with the Chirstmas fete. Since then however, the society has been re-formed, and has given two performances-one at Cambridge in aid of the Show grandstand (two nights) and the other at Hamilton. The society exists solely for the purpose of assisting local institutions and as such is deserving of the sympathy and support of the public. During the evening, the lion, secretary, Mr J. W. Warren, was presented by the members with a handsome case of pipes. The future operations of the society were decided upon, and it is probable that they will again shortly appear before the public.
