Another Inspector.
Amongst the list of appointments ; and promotions in connection with i the Post and Telegraph Department j was that of Mr R. B. Morris to be : Inspector of Savings Banks—a new position. Hitherto this work has I been done by the Department's in- ! spectors whose duties have a general application, but the rapid growth of the Government Savings Bank busii ness throughout the DominidjD has i warranted the creation of an official, j whose time will be solely occupied ! in inspecting the Savings Banks of ■ New Zealand, and in bringing about [ a uniformity of method in book and record keeping. In this regard cer- ■ tain general rules were laid down many years ago, and those rules are strictly obeyed, but there are more ways of obeying a rule than one, and a part of Mr Morris's new duties will be to bring all methods into line to the smallest detail. Mr Morris entered the service of the Post and Telegraph Department in 1875 at Timaru, and, after serving three years of his cadetship there, he was transferred to Christchurch, where he remained until 1889, in which year he was transferred to Auckland as second money order clerk. After three years in that city, he was moved to Wellington to perform similar duties, suceeding to the position of chief money order clerk on the retirement of Mr E. T. Morshead. In 1903 he was transferred to Christchurch, remaining there until last year, when he was promoted to> be Assistant Postmaster at Wellington, a position he is to be succeeded in by Mr Gannaway. During his term of service, Mr Morris has made trips to San Francisco as Government mail agent, and has a wide general knowledge of Postal and Savings Bank matters.
