A RECORD ATTENDANCE. London, April 6. The last of the season's Association football internationals was play, ed at Glasgow, when England met Scotland. Intense interest was taken in the match, and special trains, crowded with passengers, poured in from all parts of the United Kingdom, while many hundreds came over in special steamers from Ireland. From daybreak the crowd began to assemble, and at the kick-off 130,000 people were wedged into the ground, every available inch of accommodation being occupied. The ground was not nearly large enough to accommodate the immense numbers who wished to attend, and it is estimated that 50,000 people were turned away. The inrushing at the gates during the height of the rush was terrific, and 40 people were injured while trying to effect an entrance into the ground. The match resulted in a draw, each side scoring one goal.
(The crowd is a record in the history of sport, exceeding the previous record, at the game at the Crystal Palace ground two years ago, by over 5000. The enormous sum of £7OOO was taken at the gates. Fortunately there was no repetition of the fatality which occured on the last occasion when England and Scotland met at Ibrox Park, Glasgow, when a portion of the stand collapsed, and 40 were killed and injured. Since then the foundations have been greatly strengthened.)
