• In the Police Court, Te Awamntu, yesterday, before Messrs H Irvine and W. North, J.Ps'. an able bodied young man named Grace, whc resides on the Pirongia Ranges, was charged with aasautmg a native lad Wiui Kerei so as to cause him actual bodily harm. The alleged assault took piace on thn 4th of August last, and the comp'ainant was re moved to the Waikato Hospital Buffering from a broken lower jaw. He was discharged from the Hospital on 26th August. Constable MnPhee conducted the prosecution, and the caused appeared in person, 7 From the evidence it appeured that the native was in the habit of going onto the ranges, near where the accused lives, hunting for wild pigs. On this particu lar date the native had caught a pig and had finished cleaning it when accused arrived on the scene and claimed the carcase. Some words followed, aud Grace struck the complainant three times. Dr. Douglas, of Hamilton, gave evidence as to the nature of the fracture. Further evidence for the prosecution was given by two natives and Constable McPhee. The accused, nfter being warned, elected to give and call evidence. He struck the native in self-defence. A lot of evidence was given but it had little bearing on the case. The accused wai committed for trial. Grace laid an information against the nat'vo for stealing the pig, but the matter tell through.
