CANADIAN RAILWAY SCHEME. Ottawa, July 31. Sir Wilfred Laurier has introduced a Bill authorising the construction of a national Trans-Continental railway with the object of rendering Canada absolutely independent of the United States, which in the past has repeatedly threatened the abrogation of bonding privileges. When the line is built to the Maritime provinces Canada will be coinmerciallj independent, The Bill is likely to pass.
THE BOER MILLIONS. Capetown, July 30. Botha pleads that the European relief funds are spent and that he is unable to fulfil his promise to contribute £36.000 to supplement the Government relief for widows and orphans. Sir Arthur Lawley, the Lieutenant-Governor of the Transvaal, asks why the missing Boer millions are not available.
CRITICISING FRENCH POLICY. Pahis, July 30. M. Clemanceau has severely criticised Lord Cranborne for condemning the French Religious Associations Act in the House of Commons. London, July 30. The British press generally severely blames Viscount Cranborne for his indiscretion in attacking the internal policy of the French Government.

Mr Justice Farwell has granted the well-known actress, Miss Olga Nethersole, an injunction to restrain the production by Mr Bernard Espinasse, of Sydney, of a version of ' Sappho' on the ground of au infringement of copyright. THE JEWS IN EUSSIA. St. Petersburg, July 30. Two peasants have been arrested for murdering Bybalenko, a youth, whose murder has been attributed to the Kishnieff Jews for ritual purposes. One has confessed. THE CUNARD COMPANY. London, July 30. Tho shareholders of the Cunard Steamship Company have ratified an agreement with the Imperial Government to remain a purely British undertaking for a period of 20 years. MISCELLANEOUS. St. Petehsbueg, July 31. Rioters attempted to stop a train at Mikheilobo station, on the TiflisBatouu line, throwing stones and firing revolvers. The soldiers, who were summoned, fired, killing 10 and wounding 18. The cruiser Shava will be launched in August She will be 13,500 tons gross register.
