LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

YESTERDAY. The Council met at 2.30 p.m PROGRESS OF BILIS The Legitimation Act Amendment Bill was read a third time and passed. The Road and Town Districts Rating Bill pissed through committee unamended, was read a third time and passed. PRIVILEGE. The committee reported that the inclusion of the telegram from Messrs Ronjolins, Hindriiareh, and Co., in the report of the proceedings of the committee of the Council on the Tied House 3 Bill was not a breach of privilege. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. YESTERDAY. The HouEe met at 2.30 p.m. EIKST HEADINGS. The Supreme Court Judges Bill and Fire Pievention Bill were introduced by Governor's message and read a first time, as were also a number of other Bills. COMMITTEES, Committees were set up to deal with the questions of Old Age Pensioos regulations, and Education. QDESTI-INS. In reply to questions Ministers stated that The time had not arrived wheo it was necessary to prohibit the export of ewe l*rnbs. The Government could not assist Agricultural and Pastoral Societies by giving prizes for certain exhibits, as it was thought the money could be better spent elsewhere. It was not proposed to introduce a Fair Rent Bill this session. Legislation would be introduced to provide for the remission of fees on Crown grant* which had been left for a number of years in the custody of a Government officer. LIQUOR LAWS. Mr Bedford gave notice to ask the Premier if, in view of the circumstances at Newtown, he would introduce a Bill immediately to enable a second poll to be tiken, or in some other way give effect to the will of tlie people. SECOND READINGS Mr Seddou moved the second reading of the Patriotic Funds Bill, to admit of the diversion of the surplus of the South African Wir Patriotic Funds.—Several members thought the time was not yet ripe for the Bill, as all claims had not been exhausted.—The second reading was carried by 30 to 20. The following Bills were read a second time :—Medical Practitioners Registra' tion, Inebriates'lnstitutions Amendment, Dairy Industry Act Amendment, First Offenders Probation Act amendment, and Wireless Telegraphy. Mr Seddon moved the second reading of the Coastwi-.e Trade Bill.—The debate was adjourned. The House rose at 12.10 a.m.
