'.jerniauy was one of our bes: customers of colonial produce, buying largely io the London markets, German imports from New Zealand comprised principally wool, hides, skins, kauri >'uni, grass smda, and flax, all admitted duty free. The import duty collected in Germany for the whole of Australasian products annually amounted to only £30,700, while it Australasia did not enjoy the 'most favoured nation ' clause of the tariff, the amount wonld be £40,300. Should Ger many be compelled to retaliate against Australasia, and section 6 of the Getman tariff came into operation, the duties collected on Australian produce would amount to £1,063,000. Produce imported via London would also be outiable, a certificate of origin being necessary. Such ex'reme measure* woultl ruin the trade between Germany and Australasia, and new markets with South America, Kuasia, etc., would be opened.
