The Waikato Argus [PUBLISHED DAILY.] SATURDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1901.

Mrs Fry, wife of Mr John Fry, senr., of Ngaroto, died 011 Thursday last, aged 77 years. The funeral takes place this afternoon, The body will be inlet red in the Paterangi cemetery. Replying to an interpellation in the Reichstag Count Von Balow declared that the Government were determined to prevent the Germans in the eastern provinces being crushed by Polish heels. The entertainment in aid of St. Mary’s school, given in the Volunteer Hall Kami ton, last evening by the pupils and their friends was an unqualified success. A detailed report will appear in Monday’s issue. AVe again remind intending competitors that entries for the Waikato Amateur Athletic Club’s annual sports, to be held on Sydney Square, Hamilton, o'.i Boxing-Day, close with the Secretary (Mr R. Pike) this evening at Mr J. Hammond’s shop. The Queensland Government has arranged, subject to the approval of Parliament, for the purchase of the late James Tyson’s Mount Russell estate of 45,000 acres, at forty-four shillings «n acre, for settlement purposes. 1c is also negotiating for the purchase of Durandur Estate of 30,000 acres.

The Rev. J. Erwin, M A., of Cambridge, will conduct the services at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Hamilton, to-morrow. The sacrament of the Lord's Supper will be observed at the morning service, and in the alter - noon, at 2.30, a baptismal service will be held.

Th; Cambridge Brass Band will pi iy the following programme in the Domain, weather permitting, to-morrow afternoon ; march,' Ever for Thee ’; selection, ‘ Iphigenia in Tauris ’ ; song, ‘ Ora Pro Nobis ’ ; overture, HI Trovatore ’ ; hymns, ‘ Hark, Hark, my Soul ’ and ‘ Ahirte with Me’ ; selection, ‘ Trafalgar’,' march ‘ Ttfe Dragoon.’

The Very Rov. the Primate will be in the Waikato next week. On Monday, at 7.30 p.m., he will bold a confirmation service in St. Peter’s Church, Hamilton, and on Tuesdi y, at the same hour, he will hold a service at St. Barnabas’ Church, Whatawhatu, during which the presentation of a lay reader’s license will take place. On Wednesday he will proceed to Raglan, where he will administer the rite of confirmation at 7.30 p.m. in the church, and next day he will proceed to Waiugaro.

Mrs McGarrigle, of Victoria House, Hamilton, has just erected a fine shop for the extension of her present business. The premises adjoin the well-known Victoria House, and have been specially designed by Mr T. H. White to suit the requirements of her business. Although not quite out of the builder’s hands, we understand that Mrs McGarrigle will have the windows, which are of full plate glass, dressed this evening, and as she announces that she has just imported a large stock of the latest seasonable goods, our lady friends no doubt will find there a source of considerable attraction.

At the usual practice of the Hamilton Harmonic Society Mr Tudehope, who, since his residence in Hamilton has acted as conductor, and under whom the members have made great progress, tendered his resignation. This step has been caused through the partnership between Messrs Griffiths a d Tndehope being about to be dissolved. The Hamilton business will be carried on by Mr Griffiths and Mr Tndehope has purchased the business of Mr S. Howard, draper, Cambridge, where lie will open up in the course of a few days. During Mr Tudehope’s stay in Hamilton he has become very popular, particularly in musical circles, and he will be a con siderable acquisition to the music, 1 circle in our sister township. Very general regret was expressed on lus severing his connection with the Harmonic Society, and the members all joined in wishing him success in his new venture.

On Tuesday afternoon the Most Rev. the Primate will open the Guild sale of work at St. Peter’s schoolhomc, Hamilton, There will be a large display of needlework of evtry description. There will also be stalls for refreshments, confectionery, flowers and pot plants and a jumble stall. There will also be various side-shows, viz., a shooting gallery, guessing competition, local portrait gallery, guns of Ladysmith, etc. The Christmas ties, which will form a special feature of the entertainment, is of unusual dimensions, and will he a boon to believers in Santa Claus. The sale will open in the afternoon at 2 o’clock, and in the evening at 7 30. Musical items will be provided on both occasions. As the proceeds of the sale w 11 be devoted to paying for the cost of lining and ceiling the schoolbouse, it is hoped that all who have benefited by this improvement will manage to attend.
