MAGISTRATE MURDERED. Brisbane, November 22. Guilianetxi, acting magistrate, was murdered at Defend, New Guinea, by a party of escaped prisoners. Two of the latter have been re-captured. The third was partially eaten by a crocodile while crossing a river. THE PIKE CASE. Sydney, November 22. Pike has recovered from the effects cf the shooting in the police cell. Ho was charged with attempted suicide, and the nominal sentence of a few hours’ was passed. FAVOURITISM. Melbourne, November 22. The Parliamentary Select Committee enquiry into the working of the railways makes strong charges of nepotism against certain high officials.
