The Waikato Argus [PUBLISHED DAILY.] WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1901.
The farmers of the colony are quite cognisant that they are indebted to Mr Glass, the organising Secretary of the Farmers’ Union for the work he has done. If good, however, is to result from this work he must avoid assuming the position of the mouthpiece of the Union. In another column will be found statements made by him to the Wellington Press The statements no doubt are generally correct, but they should not have come from Mr Glass in his official position as Secretary to the organisation. Up to the present there is no executive appointed, and until this is the case the decision of all questions should be held over, at any rate it is not for the Secretary to deal with them as Secretary. It is for him to take his instructions from the general executive, and until that is embodied he should confine himself to organisation. Our reason for writing is that we feel strongly that the Farmers’ Union, if judiciously guided by cool and temperate men, will prove a power for good, on the contrary, if other methods prevail, it will crumble and fall to pieces. It must not be run on party lines; party politics must be altogether eschewed. As we have before pointed out, a platform on broad lines must be adopted throughout the colony and that be the basis upon which support of politicians must stand. A majority of the House pledged to the platform will assure that the farming interests will be adequately considered.
