SPEECH BY MR BARTON
Melbourne, November 12. MR Barton, at the Mayoral banquet, referring to the control of New Guinea, said that one thing that captivated the Australian Briton more than any other was the prospect of the Commonwealth acquiring dominion over the southern seas. Whilst their policy would never become aggressive, it was not the intention. be hoped, of anyone guiding the destinies of the Commonwealth to shrink from those duties which were inseparable to its position in the southern seas.
