At the enquiry into the loss of the scow Whakapai, Bertie, the sole survivor, said that alter repairing temporarily the damage incurred atTokonmru where two holes were knocked in the bottom, they left for Gisborne. After two days they found her leaking badly, and the captain seeing the To Anan, hoisted s’gnals of distress but no not ce was taken It was foggy and probably they were not discernible, When the steamer was almost out of view the scow capsized. Bertie was carried ashore on a mast and rescued by Maoris. The enquiry was adjourned for the evidence of Cap:. Lambert, of the Te Anau.
