RECENT FIGHTING. GOOD PROGRESS. RAIDERS SUFFER REVERSES. (Received September 17, 9.35 a.m.) London, September 16. Colonels Byng and Cunningham’s columns attacked and nearly surrounded 300 Boers at Barry’s on Friday. The Boers suffered heavily. A. number of burghers under Theron’s command have secretly surrendered at Riversdale as the result of Lord Kitchener’s proclamation.
Colonel Crabbe engaged Scheeper’s two hundred followers near Ladysmith, Gape Colony, on Saturday, wounding eleven. Three British were wounded.
THE CAPE REBELS.
DEATH SENTENCES COMMUTED.
London, September 17.
The death sentence and term of severe imprisonment passed on several Cape rebels have been commuted in the first instance to penal servitude for life and in the second the terms have been greatly reduced.
