NEWCASTLE ROAD BOARD.
Thp. monthly meeting of the above Board was held at the office, Ohote on Wednesday. Present: Messrs Shepherd, (chairman), C. Bycroft and W. Poynter. Mr Marwood wrote calling attention to the dangerous state of the toad leading to his farm.—The cnairman recommended that about seven chains bo formed.— This was agreed to. Mr H. Hunt forwarded a list of the native owners of the land through which the cemetery road runs,—lt was decided to complete the arrrngement with Mr Hunt.—The clerk was instructed to draw up an agreement. A petition from Mr Thus. Soper and four other ratepayers was received, requesting the Board to clear and form the road leading past their properties _in Wahtawhata, the estimated cost being about £3o.—lt was decided that the proSosed work was beyond the means of the oar d._Mr Poynter to inspect and report at next meeting. Mr Calder waited on the Board re putting pipes in the drain across the road near h ! s land.—Mr Calder explained that the drain was benefiting the road in question.—lt was decided to give the necessary pipes, Mr Calder to put them in, and also to keep the road drain in proper order. Messrs Baileyand Bollard wrote explaining their delay in delivering the timber ordered for Fraser’s Bridge, and other works. The Linds Department forwarded a list of thirds due, the total amount being £l6 13s lOd. A memo, was received from the Colonial Secretary’s office, requesting that full particulars of the working expenses be forwarded.—The Clerk reported this had been done. A telegram from Mr Lang, M.H.R., in reference to the Counties Bill was read. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Lang, Mr Bycrofc reported, with other members the Board, having inspected Burford’s Bridge, and finding it unsafe for traffic, had the necessary notification published. —This action was confirmed. Mr Bycroft reported that the drain on the Pukete swamp load had been cleaned out, and the water lowered, also that about a mile of formation was required on this road.—lt was decided to do the work when the fire weather sets in. . Mr Poynter reported having, witn several members of the Board, inspected the Te Kowhai road, and gave a list of the works required, the cost of which would amount to a considerable sum. Some assistance towards the work was effered by Messrs Hunt and Corbett. Mr Bycroft said that Morrisen’s Bridge on the same road was also in a bad state and would have to be replaced at an early date, at a cost of about £SO. • The Chairman said that it was impossible, with the funds at the Board’s disposal, to do the whole of the works required, and the question was which was the most urgent, the bridge or the road works.—Mr Poynter suggested that a loan bo obtained for the purpose of currying out the most important works in each part of the district. The Chairmrn said that Fraser’s, Morrinson’s, Harford’s and Fullerton’s bridges were practically worn out, aud new structures were required, but to attempt to do these works out of the ordinary revenue would mean that no other road works, or even repairs, could be carried out for over a year, and ratepayers would not consent to that. It was decided that the Chairman, with other members of the Board, visit the Te Kowhai district, and decide what works will be curried out. The Chairman said that as rating on unimproved vaures was being generally discussed by ratepayers it would be beneficial if the Clerk drew up a list, showing how owners of various properties would he eft cted in their annual rating if the Act were brought into {orco —The suggestion was adopted.
