THERMAL ACTIVITY.
A GEYSER ON TARAWERA. Word has been received from Mr Scanlon, gaoler at Waiotapu, to the effect that at four o’clock on Thursday afternoon, a small volcanic outburst took place on the base of Mt. Tarawera. Mud and atones were thrown up to a great height. The eruption is similar to Waimangu only on a larger scare. Only the barest particulars have been received so far. The eruption still continues. This new outbreak (remarks the Rotorua Chronicle) is situated on the base of Tarawera mountain close to the volcanic rift, and the theory is advanced that the great body of water known as Lake Rotomahana which is increasing every day in depth and volume, has percolated through to the volcanic rift, and caused the eruption. This would account for the great thermal activity now taking place along the shores of Rotomahana. The insreasing height of the lake was evidently the cause of Waimangu first breaking one. Indeed, it ia not improbable, that unless the lake finds some outlet, the tremendous body ot water may percolate through to the volcanic rift and cause another eruption.
