A RARATONGAN SENSATION.
GOVERNMENT OFFICERS GUILTY MR GOSSETT SENTENCED. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Auckland, Last Night. The Star’s Raratongau correspondent states that the audit of the Government accounts shows -a deficiency of £l.lOO, Mr R. W. Gossett, postmaster and Collect< r of Customs, was £637 short ; F. C. Goodwin, treasurer and secretary, £460 short. Mr Goodwin was killed by the explosion of a rocket, and Gossett pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years’ hard labour. Colonel Gudgeon, uucle of the prisoner, refunded £SOO of the money embezzled. Colonel Gudgeon was also in an unpleasant position as presiding in the Court aud sentencing his own nephew.
