Ix replying to au address at llib Provincial Chambers, the Duke said the . people of Christchure!) had established a/* new England, bound to the old by a two-fold cord of love and affection. Iu the name of the King he thunked them for their renewed assurance of loyally, and said he and the Duchess would always cherish gratefully the memories of the warm-hearted kindness and - generosity they had everywhere met with in New Zealand. Bis Royal Highness then proceeded to Victoria Square, where the enthusiasm of the people culminated, and where the Duke laid the foundation stone cf the ' Canterbury Jubilee memorial. The party then drove to Te Koroha, the Royal lesidence. The weather throughout the day was fine overhead, aud crowds throngiog the streets were orderly and enthusiastic. In the afternoon the party witnessed feats of horsemanship, and at night they attended the Mayoral reception in the Agricultural Hall. The city was illuminated at night. The Royal party attended the Sunday moraine service at the Cathedral.
