This is the Chinaman who subsequently married tiro girl, but the police decided to proceed with the original charge. CiißisTonußOU Last Night, Mrs Mather, wife of Captain Maher, died suddenly in ths north north train between Papanui and Addington, it is supposed from over-exertion in running to catch a train. In the Supreme Court Hood, charged with perjury was acquitted. Timabu, Last Night. Tim Teachers' Salaries Commission odened its sittings and examined A. Hell, assistant secretary, Howell, chairman, and Rev. G. Barclay, members of the South Canterbury Education Board. Mr Howell fully approved of the colonial scale. Mr Barclay gave his qualified approval, fearing future polilical pressure by tho body of teachers on the Government. Both urged tho allowance to committees be increased. Mr Barclay strongly approved of the seventh standard being instituted. A new point was brought out in that no provision had been made in the Secretary's scale for pay during the temporary absence of teachers through illness.
