Fifty thousand machinists in the United State;, have struck work, demanding ten bou s' pay fur i ine hours' work. Employ is' concessions prevented the strike extending to 150,000 workers. The Premier stated at Otaki yesterday tint a Local Government liill would be introduced during the co'mina session, and that a eonioreuoe of locil bodies would be bold in Wellington in the first weak of the session to consider the measure. A distressing accident occurred at Miraetaba on Wednesday. Two sons of Mr Cyiil White, a veil-known station manager, Herbert, ayod 15, and Miles, need 13, weie out shooting on the river bank, and it is stated commenced playing. Miles grasped the barrel of the aiin, attempting to take it from his brother, when the charge exploded, killing him instantly. A few days ago we published a paragraph clipped from a Tauronga paper, stating that it was probable that the Waikato Hounds would pay a visit to that district in August. This is not so. and although the Waikato Club is anxious to oblige the Tauranga sportsmen in the matter of a couple of weeks' hunting, theie is not the slighter intention of allowing the hounds to leave this district until September. Victoria Day was generally observed as a holiday iu Hamilton yesterday, and it w*s very quiet indeed. The weather was anything but pleasant, and on this account it is just as well, perhaps, that there were no sporting fixtures here. A couple of football matches were layed by the juniors on Sydney Square, and a social in aid of St. Peter's W.oi Iters' Guild was held in tho Sunday School room in the evening.
