FATAL ACCIDENT.
(by telegraph—press association). Auckland, Thursday. A LAMENTABLE accident, which ended fatally, took place late on Wednesday afternoon, the victim being George fl. Laurie, an engine fitter at the Newmarket railway workshops, It appears that an engine had gone wrong at the Auckland station, and he'was sent down from Newmarket to attend to it, being accustomed to such missions. Tiie engine was in the shed, near the freezing works. The cause of the accident (which was neither seen by the driver, George Murdoch, or tne fireman, who were in their places) can only be conjectured, Laurie was alongside the engine in the act of looking underneath, when ho asked the driver to cive the engine a slight turn. He had apparently miscalculated his digtanc, and, on the engine moving) his head was oaught by the eccentrio and crushed against the framework of the engine. Mr Laurie never spoke, and was found lying unconscious alongside the line with his head terribly injured. His left ear was nearly torn off, and his upper and lower jaws were broken ; there was also a ga.-h on his head. As soon as possible medical aid was sought, and the unfortunate man removed to the shed. Dr. King was the first on the spot, and subsequently Dr. Lewie. Both medical men saw at once that the case was hopeless. The ambulance heing obtained, Mr Laurie was put into it, and Dr. King accompanied him, with a view of taking him to his residence, Newmarket, but he died in the ambulance while it was going up Grafton Road.
