BLACK LABOUR.
A STARTLING STATEMENT,
Sydney, May 15. At the Chamber of Commerce Conference the Queensland representatives, discussing the sugar industry, said it would be impossible to carry on without Polynesian labour, and that the loss of the industry, in which between six and seven millions were invested, would make Queensland bankrupt. A resolution was adopted, urging the Hon. Mr Barton to make the Federal tariff one of the first questions to be considered. A second resolution was adopted advocating the appointment of a Royal Commission to inquire into the sugar industry in Queensland and the employment of black labour. The Conference has closed.
