THE CONWAY CASE
Received Apul 23, 5.16 a m. Sydney, April 23. The Smith trial was continued today.
Mary Hesketh, of Chrisrchureln said she knew the accused intimately for eleven yours. Her name before she married was Jane Hampton. She came to witness' shop it) February last. She said she had received n present of £'soo for rescuing a child from drowning. She was going for a trip to Sydney and Melbourne with the friends of the child. She asked asked witness' son whether a gentleman had called. Witness accompanied her to Bouuiugtou's, chemists, to obtain the use of a telephone. Mrs Smith afterwards told her that she had rung up Conway. Accused then asked the assistant for ft shilling's worth of strychnine to kill rats. The assistant rtfused. When she returned to witness' shop Conway was there. Accused introduced witness, and then gave Conway a pound note, tilling witness she owed him for u butcher's bill, and that, Conway hid lost money in business.
Cross-examined witness said when Mrs Smith made the remarks about Conway losing money it was in his presence, and lie did not contradict it.
