NEW HEBRIDES.

♦ AN UNFOUNDED RUMOUR. (Received March 2S, 1.18 a.m. Sydnky, March 27. A rumour, from what is described as an exclusive secret source reached Mr Barton a few days ago, that the suggestion has been made that the difficulty over the Newfoundland French shore question should be settled by the handing over to France the British rights in the New Hebrides iu exchange for French concessions in Newfoundland. Mr Barton interviewed Lord Hopetoun, who despatched a cable to Mr Chamberlain enquiring if such an arrangement was contemplated. Mr Chamberlain replied that there was absolutely no foundation for the report.
