THE REPORTED GOLD FINE AT ROTORUA.
Our Rotorua correspondent writes: Uutil the arrival of the Auckland papers on Thursday nothing was known here of the reported find of alluviil cold by. Mr Tilsley. He has not been seen in Rotorua for some time, and his discovery of gold in this district is nob a new oue. For years colours of gold have beeu found in the Mangorewu river and its tributaries, colours of gold may be found almost anywhere in New Zealand, but colours arc not sullicient from a financial point of view. The gold has beeu obtained by poundini! a sort of cement, in conglomerate rock found in the bed of the creeks and in some places in the neighbourhood. For the past 25 years gold has been washed out of pouuded rock and sand in chc creek, but no one Ins been able to find any well defined deposit in the rock. The sand in the beds of the streams is the result of the wearing away of the cement and the gold in it is coarse. It i 9 just probable that Mr Tilsley has found a richer deposit thau former prospectors, but here little reliance is placed on his discovery. The wish is father to the thought, it is said, and residents here are hoping and wishing that something will come of the labours of Mr Tilsley, for a good rush would help to advertise the place, and bring people to the district. What are evidently applications in connection with the recent Tilsley find in the Rotorua district appear in the last issii3 ot the Tauranga paper. These applications were filed at the Tauranga Warden's Office on November 26th, and are lodged respectively by Wm. Geach. of Frankton Junction, carpenter, and Henry Rowland, of Frankton Junction, publican. They are applications for " prospecting license in respect r <f other than native land." The description of the land applied for is in each "case precisely the same, namely, •' comprising! 100 acres of Grown land in Block I, Rotorua survey district, in Hauraki mining district. The area is traversed by a tributary of the Maugorewa stream, called the Ougaia creek, which runs through the Ngate Pahiko Block." Messrs Miller and Son are the solicitors, and the applications will come before the Warden at Tauranga on December llHh. The applications arc dated Thames, November 22nd. We notice that as regards Waihi applications in the Paeroa Court, the question has been brought before the Warden whether special claims applied for have preference to prospecting licensee.
