Lord Roberts has wired “ Just before dark on Monday evening the enemy were driven from most of the positions around Pretoria. “ An officer was sent to demand the surrender of the town. “Louis Botha replied proposing an armistice for the purpose of settling terms, but I replied : ‘ The surrender must be unconditional.’ “ Botha then informed me that he had decided not to defend the town. “My troops advanced next morning and met the principipal Boer officials carry a flag of truce and bringing an intimation that Pretoria surrendered UNCONDITIONALLY. “ Some of the British prisoners had been removed but the majority are still at Watervaal.
