The Waikato Argus GEORGE EDGECUMBE, Proprietor. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1899. OURSELVES.

We recognise that at this important juncture in the history of the Empire the public are anxious for the very latest news from the seat of war and all other parts of the world. Wo have exhausted every means at our disposal to procure a night telegraphic service in order to continue as a morning paper. On the 17th October we wrote asking on what terms the Hamilton office would be re-opened for the receipt of late cablegrams. The Secretary of the General Post-office informed us, without giving any reason, that he regretted that he was unable to comply with our request. On the 18th October we applied to have the office opened under the regulation for re-opening by special request, and enclosed 7s 6d, the feo laid down, and were, of course, prepared to meet nny charges that might accrue over and above that amount. To this we received the reply " That the Secretary much regrets that he cannot comply with your request."

To meet this state of affairs and afford the public the latest news, we hav3 determined to convert The Argus into a daily evening paper. On Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday we shall deliver the paper as hitherto on the three days of publication. On the other two days the papers will be procurable from our agents in the townships served by the railway. The papers published on Tuesdays and Thursdays will be delivered outside the townships on the day following. The subscription will remaiu as at present and a single copy will be sold at Id. The effect of this alteration will be that most of our subscribers will receive their paper on the day of publication, giving news up to 1 o'clock. We shall continue as hitherto, with the assistance of our correspondents in each centre of population, to gi*e the reports of the meetings of all local bodies, and the latest news of every description that may arise in the district and throughout the colony. We trust that our efforts to meet, the requirements of our subscribers will meet with their approval. It is possible that at first there may be some few irregularties, and we ask subscribers that if such should arise that they will immediately inform us, when every effort will be made to avoid them in the future.
