THE BATTLE OF MAGERSFONTEIN.
Capetown, December 15. Major-General Wauchope, who was killed during the recent engagement at Magersfonfeui, was shot close to the Boer trench, receiving bullets in his chest and * thigh. Some of the light infantry entered the trenches, capturing six Boers. ""Lack of water was to a large extent responsible for Lord Methuen'a retirement for a distance of four miles to the Modder River. Eight thousand men, half his com man l, were engaged on the 11th. The Guards destroyed a picket numbering 40, including a member of the Volksraad. The prisoners state that the artillery entirely cleared the upper entrenchments at Magersfontein. Word was passed to the Boers to prepare to withdraw during the night. The enemy's. casualties exceeded 1000.
