EDUCATION REGULATIONS.

(BY TELEGRAI'II—rRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, Last Night. The new regulations which were drawn up by the Education Department after a conference of the school authorities last winter have been further revised and amended in aceordancs with the suggestions from educational bodies ani inspectors, aud will come into force on January Ist. The principal teacher, subject to certain conditions, will now have full discretion to arrange his pupils in the different classes for different subjects, and the schools are tc be visited at least twice a year by inspectors. A pupil shall be held to belong to the standard class in which he is placed for English pas 3 subjects. In order to avoid undue complexity in classification, head teachers are enjoined, due regard being paid to the merits of individual pupils, to keep the classes in the several subjects as nearly as possible the same for each standard. In order to satisfy himself of the general efficiency of the instruction given in the tchool the Inspector shall examine a due proportion or tlic pupils of each class in such subjects as he shall choose. He may include in the number, so examined, any pupil concerning whom the teacher desires his judgment. The Inspector may, if he sees fit, examine selected pupils of one class iu some subjects and those of another class in other subjects, aud may examine a 1 the pupils of auy school or of any class to ascertain their individual progress, and he may at his discretion direct that the result of such examination shall be substituted for the results shown on the class lists presented by the head teacher. In general a pupil shall be expected to pass through one class in each subject iu a year. The " Standard of Excmptiou," under Section 3 of the School Attendance Act, IS'JI, shall be the fifth standard. The regulations are very miuutely drawn and occupy about thirty pages of the Gazette.
