(by telegraph.—press association). „ Wellington, Last Night. The writs for the Otaki election will be issued this week. The polliug will probably take place ou January sth. luformiition has been received that C. F. Hewart, of Fitzroy Bay, Pelorus Sound, has been missing since the 9th inst., if hen he went for a sail. Neither he nor his boat has been seen since. It is feared he has beeu drowned. Messrs Mcason and Marchant, engineers, who were engaced to report upon the proposed works to protect the Valley from floods, have suggested a scheme of embankment and protective works and widening the channel, involving the removal of the present bridge to another site, at a cost of £lB COO.

Thirty students from the Native College at Te Aute, with a number of Europeans, lately had an interview with the Hons. W. C. Walker and J. Carroll, and made a number of suggestions which will be brought before Parliament. They were that the Government should increase the allowances for students studying for the miuistry from £4O to £6O and defray fees of Maori medical students ; that promising scholars hs helped on to the end of the college course ; educated Maori girls be taught nursing in hospitals at the Government expense ; technical schools be established at Taumata and Otihi ; that local option be extended to Maori electorates, and if the Government were persuaded that the work of the youug Maori party is likely to be beneficial, a financial grant be made to help them carry on their work.
