Insomnia is a powerfully-built bay hor6e, standing about 16 hands, wi'h plenty of bone of tha right quality (measuring 8£ below the knee), and splendid temper. He is by Somnus, from Shrovetide, by St. Aubyn (imp), from Pancake ; by Sir Hercules, out of Pandora ; by Operator (imp); Somnus, by Traducer (imp), from Hammock (imp); Hammock by Orest, from Mother Neasham by Buccmeer. The breeding of his sire, Somuus, need not be ei.larged upon, as he descends (through both sire and dam) from that great horse Eclipse, while Ilia dam Shrovetide has the St Aubyn and Sir Hercnles strains to recommend her. Insomnia, besides winning several races, took first prize in 1895 both at Woodville and Palmerston Noith Shows, and in 1896 at Hawke's Bay he took second prize in the class best calculated to improve the breed of saddle horses, beating Black Bose, Burlington and Leontine. He also took three first prices at the Bay of Plenty Agricultural Show, 1896. He has, therefore, got the best of credentials to reconrnend him for the use if breeders.
