CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was he'd on Thursday evening, when there \ve:e present: Crs. Welis (voted to the chair), Arnold, Clark, Davis, Ferguson and Richardson. YVjsli inoton-Manawatd Railway Aoirconlar letter was received from the Palmeraton North Chamber of Commerce, ashing the Council to put certain test questions' to the candidates for the electorate about the Uovernmtnt purchasing the Wellington-Manawatu railway ; but most of those present said they did not know sufficient about the matter, and the communication was received. Ornamental Trf.us.—Replying to an enquiry from the Town Clerk, the Chief Forester, Rotorua, wrote stating : "It is not the intention of the Government to enterjuto competition with Nmatrymen in supplying Borough Councils ami private individuals."—The Chairman sail the Government need not have sent such a snubbing reply, for it was only a few vears since that circulars were received asking local bodies to support the government nurseries. Fencourt Estate. —Replying to the Council the Crown Lands Department wtote that the above Estate would be advertised by posters and pm.phlcts throughout the Colony.—Ci. Wells said that was not what the Council wanted, for maty of the posters wtre not seen ; they wanted advertisements inserted in papers all over the Colony. As the Cheif Commissioner was in Cambridge that evening, he (the speaker) undertook to interview Mr Mueller and endeavour to get the request complied with. Cnr of Auckland South African War Fund. —A circular was received, headed as above, from the Mayor of Auckland seeking donations in aid of I the fund. —Some of those present thought the list should have been headed as for the Province instead of the City.—Any donations will be received by the Mayor and be forwarded to the Mayor of Auckland, and be duly acknowledged in our columns. CAMBRiroE Railway Station. The Department wrote stating the whole of the furze, broom, etc., had been eradicated from the station grounds.—This is certainly a great improvement, and the inhabitants are indebted to the authorities for so promptly attending to the matter. Timber Floating.—A notice was; received from Peter Bartholomew statin? he intended applying for a license to float timber down the Waikato from its junction with the Orakonui Stream to Cambridge ; also for authority to erect booms at the latter place.—The time had passed for making any objection, and the communication was received. Endowment Leases.—Mr S. Howard wrote : " I shall feel obliged by your allowing me the privilege of coming uudtr the new regulations of lease of Town Allotments, which permits of lenewal at the end of the lease.—This matter was referred to the Legal and Finance Committee to report upon at the next meeting. Nuisancfs.—The Inspector of Nuisances reported as follows:—I was duly appointed Inspector of Nuisance.-' under the hand of His Worship the Mayor on the 3rd inst., and entered upon the duties forthwith. I h»d a nuisance reported to me arising from pigs being kept too near to some dwellings, and I have arranged with the owner of them to remove them during the next week or so I also had my attention drawn to a closet that was not kept in a sanitary condition, and the owner of it has promised to have the defect rectified forthwith. Re the closet on Mr J. McFarlane's property, that Mr Nixon wrote the Council about some months since, I find that a deep hole has been sunk in the ground and the closet placed over it. This hole is 32 feet from Mr Nixon's well and 31 feet from Mr McEailane's own well. This is a matter on winch 1 must ask for the direction of the Council, as it opeDS up a large question ; indeed I think that the Council should take into consideration the adoption of the earth closet system in thickly populated portions of the Borough. I have also had my attention drawn to a case of over crowding in a sleeping apartment, but that will be rectified at an early date.— The Chairman said the only portion of the report that needed any comment was that upon which the Inspector asked for direction upon, namely, the closets placed over holes in the ground. It was a very important matter and would need careful and full consideration. He thought the advice of medical experts should be taken upon it, and he moved that the matter be referred to the Legal and Finance Committee to report upon at next meeting, the committee to be etnto take such evidence on the matter as might be deemed n cessary. —Seconded by Cr.
