CRICKET.

The cricket matches under the auspices of the Hamilton Cricket Association were continued on Saturday afternoon, when Slade's Anvilsjnnder Capt. Browning engaged, the Moanas with General Gothorpe in command on Sydney Square, Hamilton. [The writer has just read the details of the engagement at Belmont, as published by The Argus special extra, this Monday morning, and the war spirit is upon him.] The Moanas, who commenced the attack, encountered a withering fire from Johnson, who aimed with great precision, capturing six wickets for two, completely silencing the guns of the enemy, who retreated to the pavilion—otherwise laager, or kopje, if preferred, after a fierce engagement, with five dead and four others sorely wounded, with 15 runs between them. 'Following up their advantage Slade's Anvils then drove the enemy on to the plain. Capt. Browning led the attack, and although hotly pressed by Ewen, and subjected to some fharpshooting from Gothorpe, he refused to seek shelter, and his charge was notable for straight-forward fighting and cutting in the face of a concentrated short range fire. He was in front right throughout the engagement and captured 31 single handed, the total amounting to 47. The Moanas distinguished themselves much more in the second charge, and Johnson (2), Meachem, Speight and Campbell shelled the position ineffectually, Gothorp occupying a prominent place until at 34, he fell from a deadly one from H. Johneon. The total score was 64. Night drawing on hindered an effective pursuit, and the engagement was decided upon the first attack.
