FRENCH CONVICT.

Edouaud Bonvy, arrested at the Blufl", was brought before Aatiog-Governoi' Stout, charged with being Jules Elicune Bonvy, French convict, illegally at large. Mr Jellicoa said the man was a naturalised British subj ct and demanded that some evidence be produced to substantiate the charge, but Sir R. Stout declined to deal with the application till Friday. Mr Jellicoe now intends to apply to the Supreme Court for a writ of Habeas Corpus, on the ground that the arrest was illegal and the warrants issued without jurisdiction. Bonvy, in an affidavit, alleges that Sir R. Stout issued a warrant on a letter written by the French Consul and certain record* received from the Governor-of New Caledonia, that he has reason to believe no information was ever laid or exists. Sitting in Chambers Mr Justice Den neston granted an application on behalf of Bonvy for a rule nisi, calling on Inspector Bender to show cause why a writ of Habeas Corpeus should not issue. The writ was made returnable ou Friday. -
