PIRONGIA.

Death of Caft. Capel.—The telegraro from New Plymouth last week announcing the deceased of Captaiu Capel, late of the AC. For«, caused deep regret and surprise to his many friends in this district. All of whom deeply sympathise with Mrs Capel and family. For a considerable time the deceased was in charge of the A.C. Force here, aod in charge of the men of the force who first begin the construction of the AlexandraKowhia Road, and was invariably to the front in any movement conducing to the advancement of the district, and a good friend to all who knew him. He was if anything geuerous to a fault, and bis charity was unlimited. On his leaving this district (to our regret) a testimonial was given to him and an address to which nearly the wkole district subscribed. That the deceased gentleman was no less popular and regretted in New Plymouth is certain, from the following copied from last Wednesday's Taranaki Herald :-Captain Cupel's death has caused quite a gloom over the various a»helic ond other bodies in New Plymouth. The deceased gentleman was a great enthusiast and showed his interest in a substantial manner. The cycling club of which he was an ardent supporter, has postponed its opening run which was to be have been held to-morrow until a latter date. Last night the City Band, instead of playing at the eastern end, as was intended, as a mark of respect played at the " May I Bridge." The deceased was a brother-in-law to Mr C. W. Ilursthouse, our late district engineer. . Comisu Elections.—After the Transvaal, War the lomiug electoral campaign is the piincipal topic of conversation, and the general opinion is that our present member Mr Lang is a lucky man, inasmuch as the Liberal League have not been more successful in securing ai an Opposition candidate a more reputable candidate to represent their opinions, than such a political chadband, who has thrust himself upon them. How anyone can vote for the "Reverend gentleman after reading the report of his full approval of political dishonesty, must have as elastic a conscience as the candidate himself. The general verdict is, Lang is safe. Sports.—ln the old days cf the pakeha invssien of the Waikato, amongst the most pleasant outings was the Gymkhanas introduced by the Officers of the Imperial troops at Te Awamutu. Those sports were always well attended, and caused considerable amusement. Once more our Volunteer Mounted Rifles No 2, are about to resurrect them, as on the 20th November a Gymkhana will be held here. The proposal which originated with Capt. Aubin has caught on, and met with universal approbation. Tent-pegging aud other military spirts will be included in the programme, and granted fine weather, a capital day's amusement will be sure to eventuate.— (Own Correspondent).
