THE WIT AND WISDOM OF IAN MACLAREN.

On Monday evening the Kev. Hugh Kelly, of Paruell, delivered a lecture in Victorian Hall, Cambridge, on " The Wit and Wisdom of lan Maclareu." Notwithstanding other attractions the hall was well filled, and the lecturer was listened to most attentively, and at the conclusion he received a unanimous and hearty vote of thanks for the amusing and instructive evening's entertainment he had provided. At intervals during the lecture the following songs were given in an excellent manner by Miss Gilmour, of Auckland, Miss Dean, of Cambridge West, and the Rev. J. M. Mitchell, of Hamilton. Miss Gilmour contributed " The Bonnie Banks O'Loch Lomond," ''Better Bide A'Wee," and "Jessie's Dream." Her singing was much appreciated, the last-mentioned being perhaps the favourite, Miss Dean sam? "Bonnie Hills of Scotland" and "The Song of the Emigrant." Mr Mitchell pave excellent renderings of " The Spanish Guitar" and "The Mermaid." He was encored for the last-mentioned, and substituted " The Tarpaulin Jacket." This is the first time we havo had the pleasure of hearing Mr Mitchell in humorous songs, and we trust it will not be the last, for they suit him splendidly. The accompaniments were ably played by Mr M. McDermott. The Rev. Hugh Kelly repeated his lecture on " The Wit and Wisdom of lan McLaren " in the Volunteer Hall, Hamilton, in aid of the debt reduction fund of the Hamilton Presbyterian Church, on Tuesday evening. The hall was fairly well filled, and the greatest interest was eviuced throughout. The rev. gentleman u a polished speaker, and he treated his subject in a light, entertaining and humourous style, being frequently applauded. At intervals during the evening Miss Gilmour, of Parnell, sang several charming numbers, including " We'd Better Bide Awee," " 1 Trust You Still," and " Jessie's Dream." Mr Jno. Gordon sang " Bonnie Prince Charlie," the Rev. J. M. Mitchell "The Mermaid " and "The Spanish Guitar," Dr. Douglas " Over the Water to Skye.''
