Buckland), Com cillors Wells, Ferguson, Howe, Davies, Richardson and Carr. The I3dB(JESS Row. —The first business was; to amend and finally settle the burgess roll, in accordance with Act. Five names were added to the list, four of than being individuals who had acquired the Qualification within the last few days. The list was then finally settled ami closed. Rates Forgiven.—Mr D. S evvart wrote that the Town Clerk demanded rates upon the Bi rough Endowments that he formerly occupied, and from which ho had paid £f> to be released. The Clerk said he understood, aud the resolution read that way, that the £5 was to release Mr Stewart from the rent only, and not from the rates. The Councillors thought under the circumstances it would be as well to forego the rates in this case, and a lesolution to that effect was pa-sed. Ornamental Trkfs.—Replying to au enquiry the Clerk of the Wbangarei County Council wtoie that that body had sold its nursery and farm some two years ago. It was resolved .to apply to the Government for information regarding its experimental nurseries. The object i 8 to obtain a number of seedling trees that may be grown so as to be ready for planting out at any time they may be required. Australasian Federation.—A very lengthy communication was received from Mr J. Kennedy Brown, Secretary of the Auckland Branch of the Australasian Federation League, requesting the Mayor to call a public meeting of the inhabitants to discuss this important matter. It was resolved to call a meeting in the Public Hail on Tuesday the 12th instant, at 8 p.m. Financial Statement.-Overdraft at 27th July, £59 5s 7d ; accounts since paid as passed, £7O 15s lid; amount lodged, £l2 103 : present overdraft, £ll7 Ils6d. Total, £2O 4s. Wobks. —The Mayor reported that the clearing of Sections 13 and 15 had been let to T. R. Ching at £0 sa. The work was completed so far as the grubbing was concerned, but the wet had prevented the contractor burning the refuse. It was a good job, and he asked that the account be passed for payment, subject to the burning being doue to his satisfaction.—Agreed to.—Cr. Wells said it was almost too late to think of planting the ground this season, and if the levelling was done during the hot, dry weather it would help to destroy many of the seeds tint were upon the ground. Poundkeeper's Report.—The poundkeeper reported that since 4th April last 20 horses and 14 cattle had been impounded, and the amount tho Council netted thereby was £1 9s. Two of the horses did not fetch sufficient to pay the fees, but on the other hand one made 4s over them; and 4-6 d had been expended in having the pound notice board varnished. Inspector ok Nuisances.—No reply having been received from Inspector Cullen re allowing the local constable to be appointed Inspector of Nuisances for the Borough, the clerk was instructed to write him again on the matter. FuBZE ON BoKOUtiJI ENDOWMENTS.— Cr. Wells said ho had noticed a little furze on one of the Borough Endowments. He thought it would be well to remind the tenants that they must keep the lands free from noxious weeds.—The clerk was instructed to serve all the tenants with a notice to clear the land forthwith. Tenders.—Tenders will be called, returnable at tlio next meeting, for filling up a portion of the Karapiro Bridge, and for forming the footpath on the north side of the Hamilton Road. Concrete Kerbing.---Cr. Wells said he had lately received some information about concrete that he thought would justify • the Council in trying kerbing made of if. He moved that about 50 yards of it be laid down near the bank in Victoria-street, say 12 inches deep and 4 inches thick. —Several of the Councillors thought that would not be thick enough ; however, it was refolved to do the work ; but before doin g it the surfaceman will make a number of trials with Portland cement and the local gravel, in order to find out what will be the best mixture. Duke-street Hill.—lt was resolved to make an alteration on this hill. The fence on the right hand, a little way down the bill, is to be removed and some filling done. This will enable anyone to turn on to the flat ground should their horse become restive or their brake not act, It will also make the driving of stock much easier, for the cattle used to get at the back of the fence, and when forced used to frequently break it down. This will be a grand irrprovemGnt and will doubtless save many accidents.—Cr. Ferguson said some of the settlers on the West* side of the river contemplated asking the Council to improve the grade of the bill, and he had heard it mentioned that they even contemplated trying to get up a subscription to assist the Council in the matter.—Several of the Council said they did not see how the grade could be improved much as the pinch was near the top, and to reduce that would make it difficult to get into Fortiitrt et. Retiring Councillors.—The Mayor reminded the Council that ere next meeting three of them, Messrs Davies, Ferguson and Wells would retire by cllluxion of time. Woods' Great Peppermint Cure for Coughs and Colds never fails. Is 6d and 2s 6d.
