ASSAULTING CHARWOMEN.
(BY TELIiUHAPII PRESS ASSOCIATION). WelbingTON, Last Night. Ax the S. M. Court this morning, Henry Ellis was charged with participating in the assault on the charwomen in connection with which Byrne and Mitchell had been dealt with. Ellis repeated the statement ho made and admitted having roughly shoved the woman, but Mrs Hicks one of the women concerned still maintained that Ellis was not engaged in the affair. Mr Haselden, in giving his decision, said : " You and your companion Mitchell have been the means of creating a miserable scandal, and a cry has been raised in the Press, and even in Parliament to compel me to send you to gaol. lam not going to belie the record of my own life by yielding to pressure however powerful, either to" one side or the other. lam going to impose a sentence I think just, neither.more nor less." Mr Haselden went on to say ho took into consideration the fact that, had it not beeu for Ellis coming forward as he had done Byrne would certainly have been convicted on Mrs Hicks' evidence and a miscarriage of justice would have occurred. As Ellis was the chief offender he fined him £lO or in default two months' imprisonment.
