FOOTBALL.
On Saturday, the 12tli inat., a football match was played in Mr S. Piokou's paddock, Wainearo, between the bushfellers and settlers. The bush-fellers had a banner with the grim device of a skull and cross bones and the heroic motto, " Death or Glory." The bush-fellers were represented by : Full-back A. Marshall ; three-quarters—W. Capper, T. Capper and E. Kellow ; half-back— R. Watson ; five eighth Mcßurney ; forwards—E. Pretty (captain). J. Pretty, A. Watson, Young, McCracken, Mold, Rowley, Davies and F. Parke 3. The following represented Waingaro : Fullback—S. Picken ; three - quarters— Hewett, R. Seavill and J. Cogswell ; half-backs—H. Male ; forwards—F. Bull (captain), F. Wilson, 11. Wilson, C. Eyre, G. Eyre, G. Bull, Ellgood, W. Seavill and L. Richards. Mr C. C. Cox, of Hamilton, held the whistle, while Messrs Yewdall and A. Wilson were line umpires for the bush-fellers and Waingaro respectively. The game was played in two spells of forty minutes each. The first spell resulted in the bushfellers being forced twice. Four free kicks for off-side play, etc., were awarded to the settlers, but no scoring was made. During the second spell, after some give and lake play, Ellgood secured the first try for the settlers, H. Wilson took the kick, but no goal was made, the angle being a difficult one, and soon after A. Watson got a try for the bush fellers, A. Marshall tried for goal, but did not succeed, the scores now standing 3 points each. Strenuous efforts were made by both sides to increase the score. G. Bull got the second try for Waingaro and H. Wilson landed a beautiful goal, the gan e now stood Waingaro B—Bushfellers '3, F. Capper got another try for Bush-feller?, which A. Watson csscyed, but did not convert, and soon after time was called, the game ending in Waingaro B—Bush-fellers 6. The game was a succession of scrums, the backs being seldom called upon to defend. Mr C. C. Cox performed his duties in a very satisfactory manner, and both sides felt they had done their duty. The losing side entertained the winners to a dinner, which had been prepared in Host Wilson's usual good style, and to which ample justice was done, after which good-fellowship, speech and song whiled away a very pleasant evening, and the meeting broke up by singing the National Anthem and " Auld Lang Syne.—(Own Correspondent). The members of the To Awamulu Football Club indeed have just cause to feel proud of themselves. During the whole of the season they never suffered a single defeat in the cap contests, and having defeated the Kihikihi boys in tho final struggle for possession of the O'Connor banner only one thing remained, and that was to get the" Inviw'ibles " of the season photographed. Mr Gaze, of Hamilton, happened to be in the town on Saturday last, and arrangements were made for the team to be taken. While all were assembled at the Town Hall the Captain, Mr Cjeof. Bowden, appeared on tho scene with a second banner, and informed his men that it had been presented to the club by Mrs Wm. Taylor. The team was then taken with the two banners flying. The new banner is a veiy handsome one of blae and black silk (the club colours) with Te A,F.(J. in a gold monogram iti the centre and edged with a gold fringe, and suspended from a pole with brass chains. Three cheers were called for the «!• nor, which, needless to say, were heartily ;,i'.'e:). The team then journeyed to Kihikihi to take part in the " A " and »'B" practice match.
