CHESS NOTES.

The Hamilton Chess Club meets every Wednesday in the Library.

£144 was the amount giveu away in prizes by the London Chess Club last year. In the Waikato-Auckland match, Waikato has resigned Board B (Schnackenberg V, Ogle) and McCrea at Board 2 was beaten by Jo wit t (Auckland). The score therefore is 3i wins each and 6 games sent to the referee, whose decision has not yet been received.

The " Hastings Chess Tournament Book" is now for sale in Auckland at ss. The book is well got up and contains excellent photographs and biographies of all the masters, with about 30 of the games played and comments thereon.

Eight delegates were present at the New Zealand Chess Council recently held in Wellington. Considering the large number of clubs in the colony, it would appear that the Association represents but a small section of New Zealand chess players, and those resident in the cities.

Ashburton chess players are at present holding a championship tournament. A telegraph match was played recently between the Palmerston North and Rangitikei chess clubs, but until the referee' gives his decision in the unfinished games, the result will not be known.

A writer in the Chiistchurch Press points out as a singular fact that while all other games of chance or skill have at one time or another been denounced by the clergy of every faith, chess alone has received their approbation. Hopes are expressed both by the city and country players that the match Waikato t. Auckland will become an annual fixture.

As a spectacle there are few things, says the "Golden Penny " which are duller t© contemplate than a big club match at chess. "There is as little movement about it a 3 about the hands of Big Ben, when you are waiting for the clock to strike the hour; and yet there is a tension about the atmosphere such as you might expect to find in a factory where they were making nitroglycerine. As you look and slowly recognise that every mail at the long tables'is trying to think 3 moves ahead, except when he is regretting with all his soul what he did 3 moves ago, an appalling desire to shout or wave an umbrella begins to creep upon you. But you must no more dare to do it you .were a burgu'ar lurking beneath *he bed while the virtuous and deter mined householder was fitting cartridges into his new revolver. No, at a chess match the visitor like the lamented Agag must "go delicately" and when he is told that this player is the great A and that the immortal Bhe must respond " Oh, indeed " in an awestriken whisper. INFLUENZA !—A Sure Cure for Influenza, Sore Throat, Colds, etc., is Manning's Eucalyptus Cough Remedy. In bottles, Is 6d and 2s 6d. • It has b?en calculated that the cost, of a muddy day in Loudon is something like £SOOO. Should your watch or jewellery need repairing, send to H. H. Howden, Hamilton. Waterburys repaired. The people of Honolulu keep open house, and do not close or lock their doors. Tramps and burglars are unknown.

With reference to tho presentation made to tho chief engineer of tho Perthshire, by tho Queensland engineers as reported by Cable lately, tho following extract from a private letter received in Christchurcb. will bo read with interest : —" Being anxious to see for roysolf the particulars of tho temporary repairs effected at gea to this steamer's broken shaft, I put on a suit of overalls, aud have been down in the after peak, and was very much struck with tho excellent and hazardous work clone by the officers, engineers, and crew. There is, no doubt, there was a great element of risk in cuttiDg away the stern tubo, and had tho watornot been kept well in hand, some of the men would probably have been drowned like rats in a hole, as there wa? only one small man-hole by which they could have escaped out of the compartment. To realise the position and the work done it is nocessary to havo seen it. This is a case where tho efforts of the men should bo recognised by the Undcr-writcrs, and, as one of those interested, I trust you will do your best to bring about such a result. The Sydney [nsurance Apsociation _ have passed a resolution with the object of di'awiug attention to the aaecossful and plucky efforts of the men..
