THE WAIKATO HOUNDS.
Although Wednesday was not a very inviting doy, the hounds were taken to Maungakawa for a stag hunt. The proceedings commenced with a breakfast at Mr W. Thornton's residence, where allcomers were entertained right royally, not only at this meal but also at intervals duriug the day. Everyone rode ponies, and in addition to the Huntsman and Whips, there followed Mr and Mrs Thornton, Mr and Mrs Boston Cooper, Miss B. Banks, Messrs F. Buckland Junr., N. Banks, C. 0. Buckland, and S. Banks. Really good sport was had, bnt in the earlier part of the day the hounds were troubled by hares crossing the scent of the deer, and of course it would not do to call them off " puss." In the afternoon they went into the country that did not contain hares, and they had a splcudid run after a stag for 8 or 9 miles, and eventuaUy had to be called off, it bting almost dark. Mr Sefton Haiiks had a great " spill," but he did uot appear to be any the worse for it.
