The Po-tmaater-Geoerol, in an interview, said if the pr.-sent developments on the Pacific Cable question ar« based en the old arrangement, the Governments would be compelled to const; uct the cable in duplicate to prevent their being at the mercy of the Eastern Extension Company, and it would probably take four or five years to construct the duplicate c-«bh\ Meantime, they must make some arrangement with the Eastern Company, whose agreement expires in April next His opinion on the representation on the coimr.ittee was that the whole committee should consist of nnn members, Australia being leprcsented in proportion of four to rive. Under the preseot proposal. New Zealand would have representation equal to about onethird, whilst her stake is not nearly as great as that of New South Wales. He estimates that the rate to be profitable would have to be 4s 6J per word.
