ALLUVIAL GOLD NEAR OXFORD.
NO NEW DISCOVERY. In connection with the statement fiom an Oxford correspondent ve the discovery of alluvial gold near Oxford, we learn that unfortunately the find is not a new one. As a matter of fact the properly belongs to Mr Duncan E. Clerk, who knows no more about the in the property now than he did in 1885, when he had some hundred tons of dirt treated. There were traces of gold, but not sufficient to warrant working at that time. Mr Clerk stated to a Star representative that he has been up at the property for the past month to see if there was any chance in the light of more recent developments in scientific gold saving of working so that there would be a margin of profit, but at present he is no further ahead in that respect than he was in 1885. He has prospected every tingle creek in the district, and has never yet seen a colour of gold, although, as already stated, traces of the precious metal were obtained from the dirt treated in 1885. The fact of the existence of gold, though in very _ small quantities, still points to the possibility that better results might follow vigorous and systematic prospecting, but at present there appears not to he anything warranting the slightest excitement.
