T. E. Clirke, chief draughtsman of the Survey Office, died rather suddenly on ■Saturday evening from h;art disease. The deceased, who came here from the West Coast about five ynars ago, was a great authority on sea fisheries. Dunedin, Last Night. Mr Williams suspended the discharge of Alfred Thomas Price, chemist, for twelve mouths, and Francis Hearot Laing for two years, because in both cases the bankruptcy was partly attributable to gambling tranractions. By the Opposition League poll G. Harold Smith was selected by a large majority to contest the Pahiatua seat, Thames, Last Night. Exceptionally heavy thunderstorms, with lightning, bail and heavy rain, passed over the town yesterday. It was severely felt at Kopu, where the lightning split a tree and nearly set fire to the telephone office adjoining the hotel.
