PUKEKURA ROAD BOARD.
Thk above Board met in the Oddfellows' Hall at Cambridge on Saturday. There were present:—Messrs E. Lake (Chairman), R- Fisher, E. Allen, and W. White.
Tub Valuation Roll.—An application was received from the Government Valuer at Auckland for the Boards valuation roll to be sent down to him, in order that the Government valuation might be corrected by it.—The Chairman said this was a very different application to that formerly received, which was: that a copy of the roll be sent. Appoiktino A Ranoir.—At the previous meeting Mr Fisher had given notice that at this meeting he Bhould move that a ranger be appointed, but he •aid he had been thinking the matter over and he had come to the conclusion that it would be better to call a meeting of the ratepayers to discuss the matter again before takiog further action. It would perhaps be hard ou some of the Cambridge West inhabitants if a ranger were appointed, for the run was of great use to many of them, and if a meetiug of those interested was held, perhaps some amicable arrangement might be arrivei at.—Mr Allen said a nveting had been held, and a deputation from that meeting waited upon the Board.—Mr Fisher was aware of that, but said it was some time since and it would be well to have the question discussed again before takiDg action.—Mr Allen Baid there were not nearly as many cattle upon the run now as there were formerly, at any rite not down his road.—Mr White stated the nuisance was the animals being on the roadß at night time, for that was when the greater pare of the damage was done.—The Chairman asked how a ranger would be paid.—Mr Fisher said the fees for depasturing and the fees for driving to the pound would do that,—The Chairman questioned if the Board could legally impound animals off the roads. He knew the County Council could, but did not think the Board could.—Mr Allen explained that the County Council would also employ the Bame ranger as the Road Board ; he was sure that matter could be arranged. The Chairman thought the matter had better remain as it was for a year, and then if the nuisance continued they could appoint a ranger.—Mr Fsher stated some of the settlers had asked the Board to take action. He knew one settler, who was a breeder of pedigree stock, who had been a great sufferer.—The Chairman said that same settler was Chairman of the Board for years, and yet he did not take any action in the matter.—Mr White believed few would be-against paying a small fee for depasturing. There were many strange cattle upon the run at the present time.—Mr Fisher said the inhabitants -should impound such cattle.—The Chairman agreed that was the solution and said the Board was being asked to do what the settlers did not like to do themselves.—lt was eventually resolved to leave the matter in abeyance for a time. Worm.— It was resolved to form about two chains of a water-table near White's hill to prevent a wash-out. Accounts.—Mr Allen explained that an account for £35 lis 9d due to W. Harris, that had been held over the previous meeting, was correct and it was passed for payment, together with T. Cowley, 19s 6d, and J. S. Bond, £1 7s.
