WAIKATO HOUNDS.
Last Saturday the opening meet of the Beason took place at the Fencourt Railway Station, and notwithstanding the exceptionally cold day a large crowd turned out, and many enthusiastic sportsmen were to be seen on their spirited hunters only too anxious to take part in the fray. Before making a start a photograph was taken of the meet for •a Home paper. After this the hounds were trotted up to Bruntwood. This was the signal to move on to the gully behind the homestead. A hare was soon on foot and went away at a merry pace, crossing the road to the Maori land. Here the hounds worked well, and after skirting the scrub in and out for about a mile induced puss to take the open country again towards Bruntwood, which resulted in a kill in front of the stables. The second hare was soon started, and the hounds running exceptionally well were again too much for puss, although she turned and twisted in every direction. Then after a short spell another hare was set-a-foot, and after a clinkiDg run got lost in the scrub. This finished our first day's hunting, each one being quite satisfied with their sport. Among the straight followers I noticed Mrs W. Thornton mounted on Fidget. Missis!. Banks on Domino, the Master (Mr H. Bullock-Webster) on Tui, Messrs WynnBrown (huntsman) on Joker, Wyatt (whip) on Captain, W. M. Douslas on Sunbeam, W. Douglas on Bob, R. Hine on Doubtful, M. H. Pickering on a brown colt, Norman Banks on Ptarmigan, R. Dodd on Miss Kate, R. Ramsay on Peacock, S. Ramsay on Grasshopper, S. Banks on Loppy, C. Shaw on Glenloch. Among those out driving and riders looking on were : " The old veteran " with Mrs Kerr, Mrs Hine and Mis& Young, Mr and Mrs Gordon, Dr. and Mrs Perceval, Mrs Alartyn on Topsy, Miss M. Douglas on Punch, Miss Ward, and many others.
