HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held at the Council Chambers last evening. There were present : Crs. H. Tristram, W. Crawford, R. J. Gwynne, T. Slade, C. Tippin, R. F. Sandes and D. Salmon. In the absence of the Mayor, Cr. Tippin was voted to the chair.-The Council sat first as a Revision Court, and the burgess' lists, as prepared by the Town Clerk, were read, no objections having been received.--The rolls were signed as correct by the Chairman and Crs. Sandes and Tristram.

Furze. —Mr W. Mahon wrote, objecting to clear furze and blackberries in front of his property, as the earth on which they were growing was carted there by the borough.—The Foreman of Works said that no furze or blackberries had been carted there, the filling being scrapings off the road.—The letter was received.

Rate.- Mr G. S. Barker applied for a remission of his rates.—Granted. Improvement.—Mr D. R. Bain wrote, asking m to the frontage of a section in Victoria-street purchased by him. He was under the impression of having purchased 33ft. as 30ft., but he had since learnt that there was an angle of 9ft. belonging to the Council. He asked «hat the Council would do, as he intended building two shops and a dwelling.—The matter was referred to the Endowment Committee, to report at next meeting. Lamps.—The Manager of the Hamilton Gas Company wrote offering to replace the present burners in the street lamps with incandescent burners and to reduce the cost per lamp to £5 per annum.—The offer was accepted. Hospital Contribution.—A demand was received from the Waikato Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for £67, the amount of the annual allocation.—The amount was passed for payment. Inspection of Dairies.—The circular from the Department of Agriculture re the inspection of dairies was read.—lt was decided to approve of the proposal on condition that the present cost—nil—is not increased. Footpaths.—Mr E. J. Davey wrote applying for some repairs to the footpath in front of his premises—The Foreman of Works was instructed to attend to the matter. —Mr J. A. Young stated that he wished to asphalt the footpath in front of his premises in Hood-street ; he asked that tho path be kerbed and formed.—The matter was referred to the Works Committee to inspect and report at next meeting. Reports.—The Foreman of Works report detailing the works carried out since last meeting, was read And received. He suggested that the embankment in front of Mr Ohivers' house on the Ohaupo Road should be widened. — It was decided to carry out the work under the supervision of the Works Committee. Tho poundkeeper and dog registrar reported that during February, March and April, 34 cattle and 30 horses had been impounded and 48 dogs registered, £l6 Is 6d having been received .in fees.—The Town Clerk stated that he bad received in cush £3 6a 6d and a contra account for £5 18s 4d, making £9 4s lOd, and leaving a balance duo of £6 16s 2d. Cr. Slade said that the money should have been paid in each month, and the present position was very unsatisfactory. He moved that the poundkeeper, dog registrar and ranger be suspended.—Seconded by Cr. Crawford. —Cr. Sandes said that the whole amount due to the Council was £l'2 15s. There was no right to make any deduction until all the accounts were paid into the Council. —The motion was then put and carried. —The Mayor was authorised to make a temporary appointment and call for applications for the positions, to be in by next meeting.

Payments.—The following accounts were passed for payment, viz : T. Jones, £33 Is 3d ; J. Ridler, 10s; T. W. Maunder, £1 2s lOd ; Jno. Devitt. £1 12s 6d ; J. Knox, £4 Is ; Gas Company, £5 ss. Old Library.—Cr. Sandes asked what was to bo done with the old library building.—lt was decided to utilise the building as a storeroom for tools and other Borough property, an amendment to sell it being lost. Rubbish. —The Town Clerk reported that a lot of rubbish hud bcui deposited behind the Council Chambers. —lt was decided to advertise that anybody place ing rubbish there in future will be prosecuted.
