CAMBRIDGE ROAD BOARD.
A meeting of the above Board was held in the Cambridge Public Hall, on Saturday, at 3 p.m. There were present : Messrß C. Day (chairman), W. H. Thomas and M. Butler. Dairy Inspection. \ circular was received from the Agricultural Department stating the Government contemplated taking over the inspection of dairies and cows. It would not, it was thought, exceed the present cost, and the work would be done by competent veterinary surgeons.—The members all agreed the ch mge would be a favourable one, if the work was well done.—The Clerk said the present cost was nil, for no Inspector was appointed ; but he judged from the circular that a charge would be made when the Government took over the work. The Valuation Roll.—The Chief of the Valuation Department at Auckland (Mr Duncan) forwarded a circular asking for the loan of the Valuation Roll for a time. A portion of it waß as follows : " It is proposed to ask all local authorities to forward their rolls to me, so that they may be corrected and revised. This will save the work of writing the usual advices of alterations, and will also lessen the work of the local authorities." —The Clerk said the Department wanted the Board to keep it posted up in all changes, and that was why the roll was wanted. The Department charged very stiffly for copies of any roll it supplied, and if itwanted theirs, they should be paid for, —The Clerk was instructed to reply that a copy of the roll should be forwarded on the customary fee being paid. Fubze.—Mr Andrew Potts wrote stating that the Tramway .Road opposite his place was two chains wide, and that only one side or it had been formed. He asked to be exempted from clearing the unformed portion, conditionally on his doing hilf the formed parts. —The Chairman said he sympathised with Mr Potts, but he was afraid others would grumble if the whole of the road was not cleared, —Mr Butler said some of the neighbours grumblod as the tern and scrub on the road harboured rabbits.—lt wa» decided to have the whole of the road cleared.— The Chairman thought if a strip of the fern was cut on either side of the unused portion of the road, the whole would then burn on a fine day. Finance.—At date the Board was in credit £3Ol lis 7d, and there was subsidy £l6 15s and rates £2l 19a 7d still due. The Rate.—Notice was given that at next meeting the Board will strike a rate of id in the £, It was thought Jd would have sufficed, but on ascertaining what it to it was found to be too little.-There will not be any County rate struck this year over the Cambridge) Riding. The Election.—Mr Butler asked if the election at the annual meeting could not he taken by ballot. Some of the ratepayers objected to the open voting in the presence of the candidates.—The Clerk said it could not be altered in time for the next election, as a special order would have to be rescinded. It was made in 1883 for the purpose of saving expense. WoiiK.s.—Mr Butler said the Thornton Road needed attention, but it was deferred until the lack road at Hautapu known as Morgan's—has been done, it having been promised some time since.
