WAIPA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Waipa j County Council was held at Ohaupo on Tuesday last. There were present: Crs. W. H. Maudeno (chairman), lid. Allen, W. Scat, F. Steele, G. Totty, F. J. Vickers, R. Bell, J. B. Teasdale and S. Fullerton. O'Brien's Road.-Mr P. O'Brien, of Pukete, again wrote, asking to have the road leadinK to Section 32, Parish of Pukete, cleared in order to give him access to his property.—The Council considered that the expenditure in this district of late had been very large, and the Council had no funds in hand for the work. G iiants.—The Assistant SurveyorGeneral wrote, stating that the Minister for Lands proposed to place the sum of £IOO as £ for £ subsidy for repairs to the Cambridge Bridge, and £25 for repairs to the Whatiwhata Swamp Road. —The Council decided to inform the Assistant Surveyor-General that the latter sum had already been spent upon the road, as the Council could not wait until winter. Maungahaka Bridge.— Messrs W. Taylor and Son's ot Taupiri, wrote notifying the council they had recently imported a traction engine from England, and proposed to work in the Waipa County. They asked that the bridges on the Ngaruawahia - Whatawhata road should le inspected and planks placed near at hand for use.—ln his report the chairman also referred to this matter. Speaking of the bridge t*..e chairman said he had not granted a license to Messrs Taylor and Son, as he considered the bridge was totally unfit to carry an engine and he thought heavy traffic over it Should be stopped. The bridge had been condemned by the Engineer (Mr Armstrong) six years ago. The work of renewing the bridge or putting in a concrete culvert should be commenced as soon as possibleas it was likely to collapse at the first floods.-Cr Fullerton indorsed this opinion.-The council decided to advertise the bridge as being unsafe, and to request the chairman and Cr Fullerton to inspect the structure and report at next meeting. t Credit Balance.—The Chairman said he was phased to report that the credit balance of the Council at March 31st, amounted to over £600.-The Councillors considered this position most satisfactory in view of the large number of. works that had been carried out during the year. White's Bbidge.—Mr E. White, of Frauktou, reported that the bridge near his property was in a most defective condition. He complained that he was unable to get a chaff-cutting plant to his place, and offered to contribute cowards the cost of renewal.—The Chairman and Cr. Steele were asked to inspect and reP ort ' mi n Alexandra Cemetery. —I he Oontroller and Auditor-General asked that the names of the trustees of the Alexandra Cemetery appointed by the Council should be forwarded to him. Alteration ofßoundaries.—The Piako County Council wrote informing the Waipa Council of its intention to adhere to its resolution, decliumg to agree to the alterntion of the present boundaries of the County.—The Chairman said he understood that a great many of the ratepayers in that portion of the Piako County were in favour of being included in the Waipa County, and it was proposed to petition the Piako Council to make the desired alteration —Cr. Scott said he had interviewed a number of the ratepayers interested and found they were all in favour of the change, and he understood that a petition was in course of circulation. Ohaupo Cemetery. The LnderSecretary forwarded an extract from the N.Z. Gazette containing a notification of the appointment of the Waipa County Council as trustees for the maintenance and care of the Ohaupo Cemetery.—The Chairman was instructed to make application that the powers given to the Governor under Section 2 of " The Cemeteries Act, 1885," should be delegated to the Council. Chairman's Report.—ln his report the Chairman said he had arranged with Messrs Harper and Berry to carry out the repairs to the bridge over the Waipa at PiroDgia. There had been some delay in getting the timber; but it was now on the ground and the work would be at once proceeded with, but would not be ready for the traction engines which would be passing there in about a fortnight. He recommended that the bridge should be stayed with wire ropes. On examination of Campbell's Bridge he found that all of the headstocks were far gone, in addition to the set of stringers reported previously. He had ordered the necessary additional timber. The various contracts within the County had been carried out satisfactorily. In all 130 chains of gravelling had been done on the Ngaruawahia-Hamilton Road, at a total cost of £54 6s. He had ordered some small repairs to the road near the Ngaruawahia Cemetery. They would have to keep in view the work of gravelling this road until next season. Furze Clearing.—Mr W. Aitken, of Auckland, wrote, informing the Council that if the work of clearing the furze from the frontages of his sections was carried out he would defray the expense.—The Council decided to employ a reliable man to do the work. Accounts.—The following accounts were passed for payment:—H. W. Gleye, £1 6s ; T. W. Maunder, £1 ; Karl, £2 18s ; Kauri Timber Company, £2O 6s lid : G. Harper, £1 5s ; H. Booth, £ls 12s 3d ; T. Cowley, £l6 10s ; W. Bearsley, £2O ; W. Fawkes, £9 18s ; Nera, 10s ; travelling expeuses, £6. Tenders —The following tenders were dealt with :—Cambridge Bridge : R. Morse, £l9O 7s 6d ; T. E. Doyle, £167 Ss ; W. Fawkes, £IBB 4s. Mr Doyle's tender was accepted.—The Chairman was empowered to employ a man to act as supervisor. The following tenders were accepted at an intervening meeting of the Waipa County Council, held 6ome days ago :—No 316, gravelling on Rotorangi Road: W. Yickers, Is per yard. No. 318, gravelling at McNicoi'a frontage : T. Cowley, Is 6d per yard. No. 319, gravelling and formation on Cambridge Road : J. Harris, 3s per chain ' formation and Is 3d per yard gravelling. No. 320, formation in Hamilton outlying district: Jos. Radford, 5s 6d per chain. No. 321, Alexandra Road : McNaul and Co., sanding Is per yard, watertablesand cutting fern Is 6d per chain, waterhole ss. Repairs.—Repairs to the road near the Pirongia Cemetery were authorised. Gravelling.—Forty chains of gravelling on the road between Ngaruawahia and Stone's corner were authorised, and Mr H. Booth's offer to do the work was accepted. Some small gravelling works uear the Te Kowhia Factory recommended by Cr. Fullerton, were agreed to. FrjitzE Notices.-The Clerk was instructed to issue furze notices to u_ number of property owners, mostly in the Hamilton district.
