Should your watch or jewellery need repairing, send to H. H. Howden, Hamilton. Waterburys repaired. At Ballarat recently a man named William M'Donald was lined £3, in default 14 days in gaol, for removing, with the object of finding gold, the top dressing of one of the streets of Little Bendigo. The arresting constable said that in consequence of complaints made by the municipalities of the " sweep up " of the street in the small hours of the morning, he "lay in wait" a few nights ago in the neighbourhood of Humffray street, and shortly before 1 a.m. M'Donald and two other men were observed at work in the road with a horse and cart, four brooms, two shovels, two brushes, a candle and a wheelbarrow. They operated for nearly two hours by the light of the moon, and when Constable Beckman sallied forth from his hiding place, a stampede ensued during which the policeman, with the view merely of frightening the goldseekcrs, fired several shots from his revolver. M'Donald, however, was the only man who came to a standstill, his mates making their escape among the holes at Black Hill.
